Basic Infertility Tests
Since infertility is a problem concerning the couple, it is essential that both are evaluated in an initial consultation.
The initial consultation with the couple lasts for approximately one hour. It aims to evaluate the possible causes of infertility, based in the medical history and the medical examination. After this consultation, other tests are prescribed if necessary.
Transvaginal Ultrasound Scan:
This test provides information about the structure and functioning of the ovaries, as well as the uterus’ structure. It can also be used to assess the Fallopian Tubes’ permeability.
Is a very important test to assess the fertility capacity of sperm, since male fertility depends on their number, motility and morphology.
Study of Tubes’ permeability:
This test may be done by the introduction of a contrast dye into the uterus and the Fallopian tubes (HSG–Hysterosalpingogram) or by the use of a saline solution and air through an ultrasound scan (SSG–Salpinx Sonography).
Sometimes it is necessary to verify some hormones that affect the ovaries and testicles functioning: AMH (Anti-Müllerian Hormone), FSH (follicle stimulating hormone), LH (luteinizing hormone), Prolactin, Estradiol, Progesterone, Testosterone, Thyroid hormones, etc.
